Departure from hotels. Founded by the Arabs in a steppe region, Kairouan was the capital of Tunisia under the reign of the Aghlabids. Its medina has preserved its monuments and its ramparts built in solid bricks. Arrival in Kairouan visit of:
- the great mosque.
- from the barber's mausoleum
- Aghlabid basins.
- A carpet workshop (optional).
- Free time in the medina (possibility of shopping for local crafts).
Tasting of Makrouh [pâtisserie a base de semoule fourrée de pates de dattes ou d'amandes] . Lunch. Continue towards El Jem. Arrival at El Jem which bore the name “Thysdrus” from Roman times – overview of the best preserved amphitheater in North Africa and dating from the 3rd century AD. J. After the overview of the imposing monument, guided tour of the interior consisting of the arena, the stands and the basement. The amphitheater was mainly used for bloody games which pitted gladiators against wild animals. Orientation and free time. A partial restoration of the stands made it possible to program symphonic music evenings as part of an international festival [chaque été] . Departure towards Hammamet. Return to hotels.
